Overview

The Laboratory Supervisor will be responsible for planning, organizing, and carrying out laboratory activities and supervising the laboratory staff according to MSF protocols, security measures and hygiene standards, to support the MSF medical team in the diagnosis of patients’ diseases.

Responsibilities:
  • Participating in the project planning and follow-up and reviewing the laboratory budget, when necessary, to support MSF’s medical activities;
  • Ensuring the compliance of MSF hygiene and safety protocols, both individually and collectively as well as informing staff of existing biological risks;
  • Supervising laboratory tests and carrying out sample collection (serology, hematology, biochemistry,) in accordance with prescriptions as well as ensuring that quality control tests are carried out regularly. Informing the doctor of the results of the tests and keeping a record of the analysis with data from patients;
  • Ensuring proper management (cleaning, maintenance, arranging) of all laboratory equipment and the adequate supply of needed equipment and material to prevent stock-outs. This includes being responsible for all required automatic instrument calibration, ensuring that no material is taken out of laboratories without prior authorization and carrying out a proper storage system and conditions, inventory, etc;
  • In cooperation with logistics department, ensuring that cold chain is properly maintained in Laboratory areas for both, samples, and reagents;
  • In collaboration with head of laboratory of DoH polyclinic ensuring proper registration and needs of all hepatitis C related lab related activities and implementing a correct use of the associated management tool to have a proper recording of laboratory activities. Preparing and sending slides/samples for external quality control;
  • Monitoring the workload of hepatitis C related la activities among laboratory staff in polyclinic to ensure the sizing is optimal for the need;
  • Ensuring that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensuring cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service;
  • Producing regular reports on the testing and on any issues/ problems related to laboratory personnel and/ or the material used;
  • In existing MoH PHC facility (Polyclinic) in Yerevan City targeting general population in a one-stop-shop-model, and including differentiated services delivery models for key populations in partnership with community-based organization in a PPP approach;
  • In the penitentiary system, by a Test &Treat approach in Armavir prison, and support with commodities (Xpert cartridges and DAAs) to Yerevan Penitentiary Hospital for diagnosis and treatment in the other prisons by reflex testing and telemedicine;
  • Ensure smooth running of lab activities in the Arshakunyats polyclinic in accordance with the existing SoPs or in setting up and developing SoPs for the lab procedures;
  • Regular trainings and refresher trainings for the lab staff in the techniques they are performing from time to time with a focus to make the Arshakunyats polyclinic team more independent and autonomous;
  • Monitoring the workload of the staff and supporting where necessary to organize replacements or rosters gaps. Regular meetings with the team;
  • Ensuring the optimum quality of performing the different lab tests within the capacity of the lab;
  • Detailed data collection and maintenance of the existing database with all relevant lab information. Supporting the team to collect necessary data and transition towards more autonomy for the Arshakunyats polyclinic team in managing and analyzing the data;
  • Supporting the rest of the team in terms of providing/sharing data as and when needed or requested;
  • Participate in the compilation of the monthly situational report;
  • Analyze the data collected to identify any specific patterns month to month;
  • Stock management of all the lab items. Monthly inventories, participating in quarterly requests to replenish items or as and when necessary, participation in international orders, follow-up of daily and weekly consumption, stock analysis;
  • Ensure appropriate and rational usage of lab items in accordance with the related activities;
  • Regular maintenance and calibrations of lab equipment i.e. weekly, monthly, as deemed necessary plus supporting the team to perform them independently;
  • Liaison with the lab team, medical liaison officer and other multidisciplinary team for any administrative support as and when necessary.
Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Essential degree as a Laboratory Technician, or a specialization or professional training in laboratory (molecular biology or any other laboratory domains);
  • Experience: Essential - 2 years’ experience in a laboratory, with GeneXpert machine experience;
  • Having working experience with training and operation of GeneXpert is a strong asset;
  • Desirable in MSF or another NGO, desirable in a clinical laboratory;
  • Languages: Armenian (mother tongue); excellent command of English; knowledge of Russian and/or French is an asset;
  • Knowledge: Essential computer literacy (word, excel, internet).
