We are looking for a Senior Java Developer and Team Lead to become the technical core of a newly formed development team responsible for the evolution of a large-scale, business-critical wholesale platform for the Australian client. Your mission is to lead the development process, establish strong engineering practices, form the development team and drive the platform forward while maintaining stability at scale. Project Overview:
- Act as the technical owner of the Java-based backend ecosystem
- Drive architecture decisions for microservices running on AWS (ECS, ALB/NLB, API Gateway)
- Lead modernization and refactoring efforts to reduce technical debt
- Define coding standards, best practices, and architectural guidelines
- Make pragmatic trade-offs between legacy constraints and future scalability*Hands-on Development*
- Design and implement *high-performance Java services *
- Work with PostgreSQL in high-load, transactional environments
- Build and evolve REST APIs behind API Gateway and internal load balancers
- Collaborate on authentication, authorization, and security (IAM, KMS, WAF)
- Participate directly in critical feature development and complex problem solving*Team Building & Process*
- Build and mentor a new development team from the ground up
- Lead code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural reviews
- Establish effective delivery processes (CI/CD, branching, release strategy)
- Collaborate closely with DevOps, product, and infrastructure teams
- Be a role model for engineering quality, ownership, and accountability
- 7+ years of professional Java development
- Proven experience as a technical lead or senior engineer
- Strong knowledge of Java, JVM internals, and backend design
- Solid experience with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL
- Experience working with microservices in production
- Hands-on experience with AWS or comparable cloud platforms
- Experience maintaining and evolving large, long-lived systems
- Ability to navigate and reduce high technical debt
- Strong sense of technical ownership
- Ability to lead by example and mentor senior and mid-level engineers
- Comfortable making decisions in complex, imperfect environments
- Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Pragmatic, delivery-oriented mindset
- Experience migrating monoliths to microservices
- PHP skills
- Knowledge of container orchestration and ECS internals
- Experience with high-traffic B2B or SaaS platforms
- Exposure to authentication systems, identity management, or billing platforms
- Previous experience building teams from scratch
